Adviser to Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani on interior affairs, Rehman Malik, said on Monday that the situation in Swat Valley has deteriorated since the Taliban failed to keep their promise and broke its peace agreement with the provincial government.
Malik did not disclose how security forces will restore calm in the region. He did, however, tell the National Assembly in an address that the government intends to follow the strategy used by Hangu, Khyber and Bajaur Agencies, a haber27.com correspondent reported.
He said the security situation is under control in Hangu and Khyber Agency and is also improving in Bajaur.
"I cannot disclose the strategy here, we are adopting to restore peace in Swat, but I assure this House that a visible difference would be seen in a couple of weeks," Malik affirmed, insisting that the government will not hand the area over to the Taliban.
Security forces have been confronting militants in Swat Valley, a former tourist resort, since 2007. Hundreds of people have been killed in clashes between security troops and militants.
