In the first incident, a civilian lost his life when unidentified assailants fatally shot him at the al-Matahin neighborhood in southwest Iraq's volatile city of Mosul. The gunmen fled the scene after the killing, according to eyewitnesses.
Security forces cordoned off the area after the lethal event and launched an investigation to look into the motive behind the terrorist move.
The attack came following an explosion near Mosul which is Iraq's second largest city. An Iraqi police source who wished to remain anonymous told Voices of Iraq news agency that the blast took place on Saturday in the village of Tal Samir when an explosives-rigged car attempting to attack a US patrol was detonated. There were however no immediate reports on the possible number of casualties or losses.
Mosul and its surrounding areas are a safe haven for militants and are a scene of constant bombings. Mosul, the capital city of Iraq's Nineveh province, is situated some 396 km (250 miles) northwest of Baghdad.
Elsewhere in Iraq, a civilian was killed on Saturday when an improvised explosive device (IED) went off west of Baquba in the restive province of Diyala.
"The IED went off in close proximity to a taxi outside the al-Rahma hospital in al-Katoun district. The blast instantly claimed the vehicle's driver," a police official in Diyala said.
Meanwhile, two bombings hit separate targets in northern Baghdad, leaving six persons injured. There were reports indicating that two Iraqi servicemen were among those wounded in the terror attacks.
On Thursday evening, a series of explosions ripped through the Shia Awlad Muslim shrine in Musayyib, 40 miles (60 kilometers) south of Baghdad. A car bomb went off outside the shrine, followed by four improvised explosive device blasts inside.
A source from the Babel police had told Voices of Iraq late on Thursday that the explosions left eight people dead and 65 others wounded.
